Had the RI lecture today. First time since Sec 1 cause I didn't go for the other 2 with excuses I can't really remember now. Vivian Balakrishnan came and he talked about how the new open media will affect Singapore due to the use of the young generation. Hmm he was saying along the lines that people now store more of their lives using digital means. These data will one day leak out on to the internet for the whole world to see, and this is irreversible, once it goes out, it stays out forever. Which is kind of true, will never be able to remove all the stuff that catches people's eyes no matter how hard you try. And he said something that nowadays no matter how hard you try to avoid the media reporting on you, it does not really matter because there will always be user generated content (forums, blogs etc) that will report the "news" for them. This article itself is indeed a perfect example. And because everyone has access to the internet using their own personal computer, information is no longer limited to a certain few who can tap it to their advantage. So thus, organizations need to be more transparent unless they want to lead to their own downfall. Perfect example: NKF.
Well I agree on the fact that he made that newspapers should only report the truth. However, the part that I disagree is about the use of rules to counter this issue. Because of countless previous occasions, it seems that many groups of people have gotten into trouble with the law regarding comments made against the government. Shouldn't they use a softer and more negotiable approach and solve the issue within the two parties and not get higher authorities such as the courts implicated within this matter. This I believe will enhance the people's will to voice out their views and opinions without the fear of persecution. Shouldn't this be one of the major steps that nations should take if they want to improve the society conditions of the country.
My view is that the government should release more information on their new developments, especially on the area of sovereign wealth funds, in which some government holdings use government treasury to invest in overseas trust funds and investments. Since it is the country's money, and in a democracy, the country belongs to the people. So in essence, the money belongs to the people, the government should inform the people on how they are spending these hundreds of millions of dollars and the profits they make and the losses they incur from this initiative. They should also release to the people which trust funds and companies that they are putting their money into. I guess that this is just basic courtesy to tell others on what they are doing with other people's property, since the money that they are spending came essentially from tax collections.
Anyway after that had normal reasons. Which were kind of really boring as usual. Almost driven to sleep like half of the time. Damn sians lah, super lack of sleep.... I just need more sleep to make myself less cranky. The school canned coffee does not really help in keeping me awake, it just tastes nice... Wait, any form of coffee does not really make me feel more awake, it just entices my tatstebuds and nose, due to its heavenly smell and tats. FYI, I am not addicted to coffee, I just like it a lot... It even helps me to get to sleep sometimes. If you're wondering how, don't ask me because I have no idea too.... Weird but true...
